Election Program in full swing

The election program has officially begun! Yesterday (Monday) some of us went to the site of the assassination of Archbishop Romero and the site of the murder of 6 Jesuit priests....this is considered tourism in El Salvador! Actually, these places are important to understanding the civil war that raged here for 12 years and we are taken there nearly every time we visit. The picture above is the chapel where the Archbishop was shot while saying mass in 1980.
Many of the delegates were arriving during the day yesterday so the official program was kicked off with dinner and orientation last night. There are about 100 observers here from 13 countries. We are getting to know lots of interesting people.

After breakfast this morning the election education began. Of course, all presentations have to be delivered in at least 2 languages so everything takes twice as long. I'm amazed at the translators and how quick they are with the language.

After lunch we divided into national groups and went to visit our respective embassies. Somehow the representatives at the embassy managed to meet with us for an hour and not say anything...very frustrating.

After the embassy visit we traveled up the volcano and had a delightful pupusa dinner overlooking the city of San Salvador.

It was a lovely end to a loooooong day. Good night.
